About Digestive Diseases

Your digestive system is made up of the digestive tract—a series of hollow organs joined in a long, twisting tube from your mouth to your anus—and other organs that help the body break down and absorb food.

Together, nerves, hormones, blood, and the organs of the digestive system conduct the complex work of digesting and absorbing nutrients from the foods and liquids you consume each day.

The Vanderbilt Digestive Disease Center has a very unique, specialized approach to treating patients with various disorders of the digestive system. We have 5 different centers that specialize in the following areas of digestive disease:

  • IBD
  • Hepatology
  • Nutrition
  • Chronic GI
  • Swallowing and Esophageal Disorders

To help us diagnose and treat your problem, we have a state-of-the-art endoscopy center.

The GI Clinic also has a Fellows Clinic that accepts patients for testing and treatment. GI fellows are internal medicine doctors in a 3-year training program to become board-certified gastroenterologists. The fellows work under an experienced gastroenterologist.
