Emergency Department

The Vanderbilt Emergency Department offers 24/7 care to thousands of patients each year. We are Nashville's only academic medical center with a Level 1 Trauma Center, Burn Center, Stroke Center and LifeFlight service. We also offer emergency behavioral healthcare through our Psychiatric Assessment Service.

Conditions We Treat

For non-life-threatening conditions (e.g., fever, flu-like symptoms, diarrhea, vomiting, sore throat, painful urination, rashes, and common sprains and strains), visit one of our walk-in clinics nearest you. 

Our Emergency Department offers the highest level of care for serious and potentially life-threatening conditions, including:

    Coordinated care for STEMI

    Vanderbilt founded the STEMI Network to improve care for patients who have a type of heart attack called ST-segments Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI). Through this network, Vanderbilt coordinates the efforts of emergency medical services, emergency departments and cardiology teams across rural Middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky. This ensures that these patients get the timely care they need to reduce heart damage.

    Our Comprehensive Stroke Center earns the highest level of distinction for stroke care. And our emergency department is also an Accredited Chest Pain Center. We use advanced methods to evaluate and treat heart attacks and other heart problems.

    The Vanderbilt Burn Center is a Level 1 unit, offering the highest level of burn care for adults and pediatric patients possible. Our team is solely dedicated to meeting the complex physical, medical and emotional needs of burn treatment and recovery.
