Child and Adolescent Inpatient Behavioral Health

Our Child and Adolescent Inpatient Behavioral Health program provides comprehensive care for children and teens experiencing acute crises with mental illness who need 24-hour care. We are the only provider of inpatient mental health services for children in Middle Tennessee. We offer a full range of treatment options and provide a safe place for children to heal and learn positive behaviors. Most patients stay for an average of 7-10 days. We also give patients and their families an aftercare plan to help continue progress after leaving the hospital.

Why Choose Child and Adolescent Inpatient Behavioral Health at Vanderbilt

  • first aid kit, cross, Specialized care
    Specialized care

We are the only provider of inpatient mental health services for children in Middle Tennessee. We have a children’s unit serving children ages 4-12 and an adolescent inpatient unit for ages 13-17. Children’s groups are more tailored toward therapeutic play and cognitive development. Adolescent groups are more structured and focused on learning and skill building. Each group has its own nursing team assigned at all times.

    Group-based treatment

Rather than isolating patients, we keep patients together in groups using cognitive intervention to treat anxiety and mood disorders. This helps patients develop better social behaviors among peers. Learning to get along with others while learning to manage mental health concerns is a primary treatment goal.

Our mental health specialists, nurses, social workers and nutritionists will work with your family to create your child's personalized care plan. Each child's inpatient care is supervised by a board-certified child psychiatrist.
