Occupational Physicals
Depending on the industry, some employers require specific exams to ensure their employees are healthy and fit to perform certain jobs, or to ensure they meet specific compliance standards, often set by governmental and regulatory agencies. These industry-specific exams help employers determine if an employee is physically, mentally and emotionally capable of carrying out required duties, whether piloting an aircraft, operating a commercial vehicle or performing a highly specialized task, especially since these jobs can greatly affect the safety of the worker and the community.
- Neuropsychological Evaluations for Commercial and Private Pilots: The Federal Aviation Administration requires a specialized aeromedical neuropsychological evaluation for pilots or flight students diagnosed with or suspected of a history of neurological or psychiatric conditions. The Aeromedical Neuropsychology Clinic at Vanderbilt provides this necessary evaluation for diagnosed or suspected pilots to be cleared to fly.
- Sleep Apnea Screening and Treatment for Tugboat and Barge Captains: Good sleep is essential for towboat and barge captains, but there are many barriers. Workers in this industry have disproportionately high incidence of sleep apnea, a disorder in which a person stops breathing for short periods of time while sleeping. Knowing the risks that come with this profession, employers can partner with the Vanderbilt Sleep Disorders Center for sleep apnea screening as well as treatment to meet certain health standards set by the U.S. Coast Guard.
- Department of Transportation (DOT) Physicals: VUMC clinicians provide required physicals for Metro Nashville Public School (MNPS) bus drivers in specialized corporate clinics, as well as at Vanderbilt Health Walk-in Clinics. Contact the Employer Solutions team for more information on how to arrange DOT physicals for your workforce.
Executive and Performer Physicals
Vanderbilt Health can accommodate the fast-paced schedules of business executives, entrepreneurs and entertainers who have little time to spare, and need to remain in top health to match their top performance.
- Executive Physicals: The Vanderbilt Executive Health Physicals program offers an annual or one-time comprehensive, personalized medical assessment and physical that includes a strategy for preventing disease and optimizing health.
- Voice Performer Physicals: A program is in development specifically for artists and performers who use their voice professionally to ensure their vocal muscles are in optimal health. The physical provides a thorough assessment as well as a series of check-ins with speech pathologists to reduce undue pressure and work on the vocal folds.
