General Cardiology: What to Expect

A general cardiologist is a primary care doctor for your heart. Your cardiologist will assess your overall heart health and may order tests and procedures, prescribe medications or refer you to subspecialists at Vanderbilt. The type of heart specialist you need will depend on what area of your heart is affected:

  • Heart’s electrical system, responsible for your heartbeat
  • Heart valves, which allow blood to flow in and out of your heart
  • Veins and arteries, the vessels that carry blood to and from your heart
  • Heart’s muscle tissue, which keeps your heart strong

Based on your condition, your general cardiologist may refer you to a specialist for:

  • Interventional cardiology: An interventional cardiologist can perform minimally invasive tests or procedures. Learn more about interventional cardiology.
  • Vascular medicine: If your condition involves your veins and arteries, you may see a specialist in vascular medicine. Find out more about vascular medicine.
  • Surgeon: Your general cardiologist may also refer you to a cardiac surgeon or a vascular surgeon. Read about cardiac surgery and vascular surgery.
