Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center now in Wilson County

In August, Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center (VICC) opened a new center in Wilson County, expanding Vanderbilt’s nationally recognized cancer program and offering the nation’s most advanced radiation technology in a convenient location. The cancer center, which is one of only 51 Comprehensive Cancer Centers designated by the National Cancer Institute, provides a full range of specialties including radiation oncology and medical oncology.

Innovative Care Partners

“The radiation oncology clinic in Wilson County has been fully upgraded to provide the latest treatment options in a beautiful new clinic that is fully integrated with medical oncology services,” said Eric Shinohara, MD, MSCI, Ingram Association Professor and chair of Radiation Oncology at VUMC.

VICC at Wilson County is equipped with an Ethos Radiotherapy System, one of only four in the country. Ethos, which is newly approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, uses artificial intelligence to create an adaptive radiotherapy system. The technology allows clinicians to access diagnostic quality MR, PET and CT images during planning and treatment, view daily changes in a patient’s anatomy and adjust the radiation plan in real time. The technology helps radiation oncologists quickly change treatment plans if a targeted tumor has changed size or shape.

Additionally, VICC at Wilson County offers high dose (HDR) brachytherapy therapy which can be used to treat certain gynecological, prostate, lung or gastrointestinal cancers. These advanced therapy systems, combined with VUMC’s highly regarded cancer specialists, deliver precise and personalized cancer treatments.

“The new Ethos treatment system along with our new high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy unit allow us to provide a wide range of radiation services conveniently to the people of Wilson County,” said Shinohara.

The opening of this VICC location follows VUMC’s Aug. 1, 2019, acquisition of the Wilson County hospital. VICC also has centers and/or clinic services in the Tennessee cities of Nashville, Franklin, Clarksville, Springfield and Spring Hill. VICC, in collaboration with Erlanger Health System, is expanding its services into Chattanooga, starting in October. Its experts also consult with hospitals and community oncologists throughout a multistate region through the Vanderbilt Health Affiliated Network.
