Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is often called the "quality of life profession" because its aim is to enhance a patient's function and well-being after injury or illness.
Our specialists focus not on one part of the body. Instead, we take a comprehensive approach to putting all the pieces of a person's life back together after injury or disease. This includes address medical, social, emotional and vocational needs.
Our rehabilitation physicians, called physiatrists, manage a wide range of issues, from severe trauma recovery to injury prevention for athletes. We design treatments plan that can be used by patients with or without the help of our rehabilitation team.
At Vanderbilt, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation offers seamless, world-class care iin the hospital and in outpatient clinics. Our specially trained experts coordinate care with the entire healthcare team, including other specialists across Vanderbilt University Medical Center. This means that patients who receive initial treatment at Vanderbilt enjoy a smooth, consistent and predictable transition to rehabilitation services in our program, including a high-quality home care service.
As part of a comprehensive academic medical center, we integrate the latest research in fields such as sports medicine, pain medicine, rehabilitation and physical medicine to offer our patients the most advanced care available.
Our team members collaborate with their peers in other areas of the medical center, including orthopaedics, internal medicine, pediatrics and anesthesiology. This offers our patients a personalized and innovative approach to their care that is not available outside a specialized research center like Vanderbilt.
Physician and Rehabilitation Services
We offer personalized care for a wide range of conditions. A physiatrist (rehabilitation doctor) has special training in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R). Physiatrists diagnose and treat injuries or illnesses of the nerves, muscles, bones and brain that affect movement.
Many of our services are provided in the Vanderbilt Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital. Our patients also may use the Vanderbilt Dayani Center, the first medical fitness facility in Tennessee to achieve accreditation from the Medical Fitness Association. Also included under the umbrella of our department is the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, which uses complementary approaches such as yoga, accupuncture and mind-body counseling that work with more traditional methods to optimize your health.
