Interventional Cardiology Program

The Interventional Cardiology Program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center uses minimally invasive techniques to treat heart and blood vessel diseases. Our experienced specialists often can replace heart valves and repair other heart defects in the cardiac catheterization lab (“cath lab”) without traditional surgery.

Interventional Cardiology: Why Choose Vanderbilt

  • Recognized care: Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Institute is among the best heart programs in the nation and is the top-ranked program in Tennessee, according to U.S. News & World Report. Vanderbilt University Medical Center is ranked the No. 1 adult hospital in Tennessee.
  • Depth of experience: We perform more than 6,000 procedures every year in our cardiac catheterization lab. That’s more than any other hospital in the region. Our vast experience means expert care for you. We welcome patients with even the most advanced or complex heart conditions, who may have been turned away by other hospitals.
  • Top experts: Our interventional cardiologists are leaders in the specialty. They give presentations at national conferences and have been among the first to perform and refine innovative techniques.
  • Advancing research and treatments: We offer advanced therapies that are not widely available. For example, we were the first in Nashville to consistently perform interventional cardiology procedures through a wrist artery instead of a leg artery. We also were first in Tennessee to use minimally invasive catheter techniques to replace aortic valves and to treat mitral valve insufficiency.
  • A team approach: Our cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and vascular medicine specialists work together to customize treatment for you.
  • Research and clinical trials: As the only academic medical center in Middle Tennessee, we offer the latest approaches to diagnosis and treatment. You may have access to clinical trials (research studies) studying new approaches to care before they are widely available.
