About the Kidney-Pancreas Transplant Program at Vanderbilt
Vanderbilt University Medical Center performed its first kidney transplant in 1962, which also happened to be the first organ transplant in Nashville. Over the course of 50 years, the Vanderbilt-VA program has performed almost 5,000 transplants. Kidney transplantation is offered as one of the treatment options for end-stage renal disease. Key components of the program include:
- aggressive patient education,
- increased use of outpatient treatment regimens,
- decreased rejection rates, and
- an increase in the number of living donor transplants performed.
Vanderbilt provides transplant services for both adult and pediatric patients.
