Liver Transplant
Vanderbilt Health performs more liver transplants than any other program in Tennessee, giving new hope and longer life to patients suffering from end-stage liver disease. Our specialists offer innovative treatment options that allow us to serve more patients, including high-risk patients who may not be candidates for transplant at other medical centers. These include living donor transplant and dual-organ transplant for complex liver-heart and liver-kidney dysfunction.
Conditions We Treat
Conditions we treat that can lead to end-stage liver failure or cirrhosis requiring a liver transplant include but are not limited to:

Why Choose Liver Transplant at Vanderbilt
- Knowledge and experience
We perform more than 150 liver transplants each year, which is more than any other program in Tennessee. This experience translates into the best possible care and results for you.
- Living donor program
We offer a living donor transplant program to reduce wait times for a healthy liver. By using part of a liver from a living donor, the patient has a better chance of a longer, healthier life.
- Advanced procedures
As part of an academic medical center, our team offers innovative procedures not available at other medical centers. This includes specialized split liver transplant procedures and dual organ transplants, such as liver/heart and liver/kidney. We also specialized in liver transplantation in babies under 20 pounds.
- Team approach
Our liver surgeons and hepatologists combine their expertise to create a personalized care plan that is right for you. These specialists work closely with a team of psychiatrists, transplant pharmacists, nurses and social workers to provide you with quality care before, during and after your liver transplant.
- Advancing transplant through research
As part of an academic medical center, we continually research new treatments. We are one of just 15 medical centers participating in a study to test a new transport system for donor livers that could expand the number of livers suitable for transplantation.
- Clinical trials
Because we are part of an academic medical center, we offer access to some of the most promising new treatments and therapies being tested in clinical trials. Participating in a clinical trial is always optional. Find a clinical trial.
- Veterans' care
We are one of only a few transplant programs designated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to provide organ transplant services to our nation’s veterans.
- Pediatric care
Our smallest patients require a dedicated team of specialists who are as knowledgeable as they are comforting. We provide pediatric liver transplants through Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.
