What Makes Us Special
Commitment to Excellence.
Vanderbilt University Medical Center has consistently been designated one of the nation's finest centers for Respiratory and Lung Disorders. In 2009, Vanderbilt had the honor of again being selected to the U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll of Best Hospitals. At Vanderbilt our one-year outcomes have consistently been on par with national averages, and since 2008 we have had a one-year survival rate of over 90%.
Vanderbilt Lung Transplant offers patients one of the shortest wait times in the U.S.
Since the introduction of a national priority based waiting list in 2005, the majority of recipients have waited less than 4 months for lungs at Vanderbilt once they are placed on the waiting list.
Early Referral is Key.
As wait times have become shorter it has become critical for potential candidates to be referred early. This enables us to work with the patient to make sure they are as healthy as possible prior to underdoing surgery. We know that the patient's pre-transplant health directly impacts his or her survival after transplant. That's why at Vanderbilt we work with each patient to help him or her prepare for a transplant months before they are placed on a waiting list.
