The Liver

The Call Has Come

You finally get the call you've been waiting for. Now begins the whirlwind of emotions-- from excitement to anxiety. Rest assured-- this is very normal.

Being called in for transplant

You will receive a call from a Transplant Nurse Coordinator when an organ has been identified for you. Most calls come in the evening. We will attempt to reach you at home first and then at any other numbers. Always make sure we have current phone numbers.

We will only attempt to locate you for one hour and then move on to the next person on the list.

What happens next?
Things will move quickly from this point forward. You will need to gather your belongings and travel to the hospital as quickly as possible. Do not be surprised if you experience several emotions between the time you get the call for your transplant and the time you arrive at the hospital. Many people say they have thoughts of:
  • "I can't believe this is happening"
  • "I am scared"
  • "I'm so happy"
  • "Did I make the right choice?"

All of these feelings are normal and to be expected.

What is a "dry run"?
It is important to realize that sometimes you will be called in for transplant only to be sent back home because the donor liver was not acceptable. We realize this is frustrating for the patient and family, but it is just an accepted part of the transplant process and may happen several times.
