Ototoxicity
Ototoxicity is damage to your inner ear caused by exposure to toxic agents, which may include certain drugs and chemicals.
Ototoxicity can be temporary or permanent. There is no test that can positively confirm a diagnosis of ototoxicity.
Symptoms
Symptoms include:
- Hearing loss
- Loss of balance
- Oscillating vision (in which items appear to swing, jerk or wiggle)
Treatment
Treatment is aimed at restoring hearing. Hearing aids and, occasionally, cochlear implants are recommended. Physical therapy may help you regain balance.
